March 8th is International Women’s Day – a day promoted throughout the world to protect the equal rights of women. You may scoff at this and think that it is just another day, but since the beginning of time, when Eve tempted Adam with the apple, it has been an uphill battle for women to be recognized as equals. Even in the 1900s in America, women had no voice and were still considered possessions of the family – just as a milk cow or a plough horse. Ninety percent of the ladies married young and the family turned her over to her husband as his possession. No kidding – the marriage contract stated that it was a man’s duty to financially support his wife and in doing so it was the wife’s duty to serve and obey him. A woman could not vote or get credit in her name alone. Her life was confined to the home, where her days were filled with cooking, cleaning, chopping wood, canning food, sewing, raising children and washing clothes (by hand). This is beginning to sound more like an indentured servant than a wife! If a woman did not marry, than it was the work force where she faced menial 12-hour days of labor as a domestic servant or a factory worker, and most of her money went to her parents. Women were restricted in the workplace because it was a known fact that they would get married and leave. But that was a century ago and the ladies of America have truly come a long way. We have the right to vote, have our own credit, the right to choose whatever career we wish, live where we want and to marry or not – all this in just a century. Unfortunately, many women of the world are still living in servitude as prisoners in their own home. We still have a long way to go, but freedom and equality can be achieved. Please go online and check out what is being planned to celebrate International Woman’s Day in your area and help end the servitude so that everyone can be equal with dignity on this earth – no matter their ideology or political views. We can do it!
