WORN OUT ‘68 KW
GETS A NEW LIFE

|
This month’s
"Readers And Their Rigs" comes all the way from
Breslau, Ontario, Canada. Brent Kurtz of Brian Kurtz
Trucking sent us some "before" and
"after" photos of their 1968 Kenworth conventional
they found in a Canadian scrap yard back in 1998. Beginning
work immediately, they fully restored the truck to
better-than-new condition in just under two years. Built as
a company showpiece to partly work and partly have fun with,
the truck’s old 335 Cummins was removed and replaced with
a 370 horsepower electronic N14 engine. The rig’s Eaton
18-speed tranny and 4:11 rears provide plenty of torque and
top speed to not only drag race it on occasion but also
participate in Quebec’s annual truck rodeo. One of the
events at this rodeo features big rigs drag racing while
pulling a 90,000 lb. load of lumber up a 12% grade. Now that’s
rough! The ‘68, which has a 235" wheelbase and is
painted white with blue fenders, also enters truck pull
races, where rigs see how far they can drag a huge chunk of
concrete. Those boys up in the Great White North really love
to have fun with their beloved trucks. "The truck has
been great for company morale," said Brent Kurtz,
service manager and part owner of the family-run trucking
company. "We showed the truck all summer and won lots
of awards," continued Brent. Brian Kurtz Trucking was
started back in 1975 out of Brent’s father’s home.
Today, the company owns and operates over 50 trucks, hauling
LTL throughout Canada and the lower 48 states. If you’d
