That is enough to strike fear into anyone’s heart. Whether you are wanting to upgrade or downsize, where do you begin? Not only do you have to pack, but you have to get rid of almost half of what you have collected since your last move. Since I just recently moved, I thought it might be good to share some of the “wisdom” I gained from it. So, here’s a little mover’s boot camp – discipline, discipline, discipline. No matter what, be firm in your convictions and actually sit down and list what items you definitely need and what items you definitely need to let loose. A helpful device to assist your decision making is called a tape measure – especially if you are downsizing. If it doesn’t fit, get rid of it! Also, when arranging your new place, remember to leave open spaces – it gives the appearance of a larger room and also allows one to move around more freely. Of course, you are thinking, easier said than done, but that is not true. Possessions are sometimes the hardest to let go, but remember others may need something that is stuffed into your closet. So, when you are taking inventory, remember how it may benefit others. You can always have a huge garage sale (when one moves they always need extra cash). Not only do you pass on your stuff to others, but you are paid in the process – not too shabby. And, what does not sell, just give it away to charity. This way, many people will benefit from your generosity. A good rule of thumb – when you come across clothing, tools, utensils or other items that have been packed away and not used for a long time, it is time to get rid of it. Think of what you really need. The combination of discipline and common sense equates to an easier move. There is nothing worse than packing and moving tons of boxes only to find out you have no room for half of them. You wasted time, money and energy. Another helpful hint – if you have some time to get into your new place early, set up your kitchen, bathroom and closets before the big move date. This way, you will be able to function somewhat normally right out of the gate. After the move, it will take a while to settle in, but once you do, it will be such a lightness of feeling because finally you are rid of all that stuff that was just weighing you down. So, when you hear the word MOVE, don’t panic – just be logical about it, do what you need to do, and as with all things remember – this too shall pass.

Life goes on as usual until one word begins to loom in the horizon – you have to MOVE!
