{"id":720,"date":"2011-05-01T08:14:19","date_gmt":"2011-05-01T12:14:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/?p=720"},"modified":"2011-06-01T23:10:12","modified_gmt":"2011-06-02T03:10:12","slug":"40-years-of-fun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/2011\/05\/show-reports\/40-years-of-fun\/","title":{"rendered":"40 Years Of Fun!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS01.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-723\" title=\"MATS01\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS01-300x270.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS01-300x270.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS01-600x542.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS01.jpg 742w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The 40th annual Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) kicked off the 2011 season with a bang!\u00a0 Held once again at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, KY on March 31st through April 2nd, the massive show had 1,039 exhibiting companies, stretched out over 1.2 million square feet under roof, and saw more than 76,000 attendees pass through the doors over the three days of the event.\u00a0 If this show is any indication as to how the year is going to be, it should be a good one.<\/p>\n<p>Almost every hall and wing of the Expo Center was filled to capacity with vendors from all segments of the trucking industry.\u00a0 Although there were no major unveilings or introductions with the OEMs this year, there was still a lot to see.\u00a0 The Western Star booth, touting a \u201cDepartment of Serious Trucks\u201d theme, had several head-turning rigs on display, including a 4900EX painted white and brown with a leather-clad bumper and grille surround, as well as leather \u201csaddle bags\u201d over the fuel tanks.\u00a0 Some people loved it &#8211; others did not &#8211; but either way, people were talking about it and taking pictures of it all three days.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS02.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-724\" title=\"MATS02\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS02-300x191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS02-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS02-600x382.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS02.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Peterbilt\u2019s large booth featured a line-up of their fleet trucks and aerodynamic models, all painted red, while Volvo\u2019s booth had all light blue trucks in it.\u00a0 Kenworth, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the T800, had all sorts of vocational units in their booth.\u00a0 Mac Trailer had an impressive display featuring one of their polished pneumatic trailers, propped up over a diamond-plate-covered lunch counter, forming a very unique roof (and an eye-catching centerpiece to their booth).\u00a0 Over in the West Wing, vendors were crammed into every corner and, being the oldest and smallest building, it was hard to even walk through it.\u00a0 Out in the West Wing Pavilion, there was a large antique truck display with tons of cool old rigs and a food court.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS03.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-725\" title=\"MATS03\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS03-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS03-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS03-600x373.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS03.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>One noteworthy addition to the show was the fact that Panelite is back.\u00a0 After closing their doors over a year ago, the company is now back in business with a new owner.\u00a0 Canadian-based Dieter\u2019s Stainless Steel Truck Accessories will be continuing the tradition of building the quality products that Panelite was known for making.\u00a0 We wish them all the luck!<\/p>\n<p>Over in the North Wing, the 10-4 booth was extremely busy as we handed out thousands of free magazines, posters and centerfolds, and sold t-shirts.\u00a0 We had allotted a certain amount of magazines and posters for each day, but every day we ran short hours before the show closed.\u00a0 We\u2019d like to thank our good friends from Minnesota, Marion Stolz, her son Jim and his girlfriend, Jed and Theresa from Missouri, and Bryan Becker, our t-shirt guy from California, for all their help in the booth this year (photo 2).\u00a0 You guys really made our job a lot easier &#8211; namely the 22nd Annual Paul K. Young Truck Beauty Championship.\u00a0 With about 85 total trucks on the lot (65 in the PKY competition and 20 just on display), there was definitely room for a few more, but the quality of rigs was breathtaking.\u00a0 This year there were several awesome new trucks unveiled at the show including Scott Diller\u2019s \u201cRed Dawn\u201d (on our cover and centerfold this month), a spectacular 1981 Kenworth A-Model (photo 8), the latest Peterbilt and tank built by Farmer\u2019s Oil called \u201cMomma Cried\u201d (photo 6), which features all sorts of unique items, like a toolbox hidden inside a \u201cdummy\u201d fuel tank (photo 1), and Joplin Peterbilt\u2019s latest creation, a Jade Green 1965 Needlenose Pete with a Mercury sleeper (photo 5) built for Sam Helt, just to name a few.<\/p>\n<p>There were also a lot of familiar names and faces (as well as rigs) on the lot, too.\u00a0 Vinnie Diorio brought out his latest black and orange combo called \u201cRollin 4 Jake\u201d (photo 3), which was built in memory of Jake Eilen (the truck once belonged to Jake).\u00a0 Bob &amp; Shelly Brinker earned several awards for their well-known mural-covered Freightliner, and Bill &amp; Marie Sandvik did well with their latest Peterbilt from California.\u00a0 Jerry Beaudoin of SRS had a new (old) ride that was lookin\u2019 good, too (he fixed up his first truck in honor of his company\u2019s 10th anniversary).\u00a0 Jerry\u2019s orange Peterbilt and polished Mac End Dump (photo 7) won several trophies, including Best of Show Working Bobtail.\u00a0 Jeremiah Wolfe and his hot rod Peterbilt (photo 9) was also turnin\u2019 some heads (it was one of our favorite rigs on the lot).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-727\" title=\"MATS05\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS05-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS05-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS05-600x377.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS05-640x400.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.tenfourmagazine.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MATS05.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Also out on the show lot, about 30 students from Donny Doverspike\u2019s Diesel Technology Course at the Clarion County Career Center located in Shippenville, PA were showing off their latest \u201cExtra Credit\u201d project.\u00a0 At the awards ceremony on Saturday morning, the students were given a special recognition award and achievement trophy.\u00a0 These kids, with the help of over 20 generous sponsors, built a slick black 2004 Peterbilt with wild graphics.\u00a0 There was no Big-Rig Build-Off this year, but all of the past champions were invited to come out and show off their winning rigs once again, and all but one showed up.\u00a0 Hopefully, next year, the Build-Off will be back.<\/p>\n<p>Back inside, on Saturday afternoon, 10-4\u2019s Erik Sieben was asked to pull the winning ticket in a drawing for a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy.\u00a0 The folks at Lifetime Nut Covers sold raffle tickets for the motorcycle at various events over the past eight months, and when Erik pulled the name, nobody would have believed that it would not only be someone at the show, but someone we knew.\u00a0 Ronnie Tisdale, a truck driver and mechanic for Jon Davis Trucking out of Alabama, was the lucky winner (photo 4).\u00a0 And it just so happens that Jon Davis Trucking is the company that delivers our magazines all along I-10 and I-20 from New Mexico to South Carolina.\u00a0 Ronnie was just outside when they called his name, so his friend and ours, \u201cL.A.
