Highway Mirage is one of the most commonly-seen optical illusions in which shimmering pools of water seem to cover the roadway ahead. The effect is caused by a thin layer of hot air just above the ground. The \u201cwater\u201d is actually a reflection of the blue sky, but a close look at this image also shows reflections of trucks, mile-markers and roadside grass \u2013 and a 1960 Kenworth that was never produced, with fenders flowing smoothly into square fuel tanks. That\u2019s when it\u2019s time to grab the CB and ask the driver, \u201cAre you real?\u201d Those questions can be heard at night, as well, when long-haul truckers see rigs like this in their mirrors passing them by. And, surprisingly, there are more than a few of these old needle-noses still out there working hard.
