\"\"<\/a>My good friend Kim Grimm (or as I call her, Mama Kim) who writes the \u201cTrucker Talk\u201d column in this magazine, told me an endearing story about a young man named Alex who has dreams of being a truck driver yet is hindered by his autism from ever getting his license to drive. I heard her describe Alex and I was inspired to write this poem in honor of him, and also to show him my appreciation for his strong desire to do whatever he can to be involved with the trucking industry. I don\u2019t want to give away the details to Kim\u2019s story this month so I encourage you to read her story first and then come back to this poem. I hope you are as inspired by this young man and the family and friends who surround and support him as I am. I only hope someday to actually meet him in person. I know we share an earnest and slightly overboard enthusiasm for our beautiful big rigs. Way to go, Alex! I hope you enjoy this poem titled \u201cOde to Alex\u201d in your honor.<\/p>\n

I climb up in my brand new semi,
\nGoing some place I don\u2019t know.
\nEveryday a new adventure,
\nI\u2019d sure take you, if you\u2019ll go.<\/p>\n

Yesterday I rolled through \u2018Frisco,
\nMakin\u2019 drops in Oakland Bay.
\nThe day before, in Albuquerque,
\nLas Cruces and Santa Fe.<\/p>\n

Where I roll, the diesel lingers,
\nMaking friends on my C.B.
\nLeland Martin\u2019s \u201cStone Cold Fingers,\u201d
\nCranking out on my CD.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t have a boss who tells me,
\nWhere to go and what to do.
\nI go where my mind will take me,
\nFrom Washington to Waterloo.<\/p>\n

Most men wouldn\u2019t dare to follow,
\nOr try to drive the roads I take.
\nI run north with Debogorski,
\nTrucking \u2018cross a frozen lake.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve got all the latest gadgets,
\nChrome and lights and stainless steel.
\nAir-ride seats and custom paint,
\nAnd a big ol\u2019 steering wheel.<\/p>\n

All these places I have traveled,
\nCoast to coast and points between.
\nI\u2019m not trapped within my mind,
\nI\u2019m just living out my dream.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve rolled in half a dozen convoys,
\nBeen to truck shows far and wide.
\nI\u2019ve met some nice and friendly people,
\nFellow truckers filled with pride.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been all across the atlas,
\nI roll my rig and treat \u2018er right.
\nAll these miles and I still make it,
\nHome in my bed every night.<\/p>\n

My name is Alex – I\u2019m a trucker,
\nIt\u2019s in my blood and in my genes.
\nAnd when I\u2019m not out on the highway,
