    Daydreaming About Retiring

Have you been on the road for a while?  I mean a LONG while?  Then I’m sure it’s safe to assume this truckin’ thing is in your blood.  No shame in that.  It’s in mine, too.  And that means it’s also probably true that you’ve considered hanging it up from time to time.  Maybe not necessarily to pick a new career, because let’s just be honest, what better career could there be, right?  But I’m talking about those thoughts that come to mind about where this ribbon of highway might come to an end – the idea of quitting when you’ve saved enough to jump ship and settle down.  I’m a long way from seriously thinking about retirement, but that doesn’t mean I don’t daydream about what that might be like someday.  Dad drove for 40+ years until his health took him off the road, and he passed away shortly thereafter.  I somewhat joke about driving a truck until the day I die, but honestly, that’s fine with me.  But I also pass a lot of mile-markers, white lines, and stateline signs while pondering what life might be like if I were able to quit this habit of mine.  Just thinking.  I’m not actually tryin’ to quit… I mean, c’mon… really?!

TRYIN’ TO QUIT (WELL, NOT REALLY)
    By Trevor Hardwick

I keep thinkin’ that I’m breakin’ even,
I’ll save somethin’ then I’ll shut ‘er down.
I’ve tried stayin’ but I keep on leavin’,
Loadin’ up, and headin’ out of town.

The more often that I keep thinkin’,
Being gone just ain’t my style.
The deeper down into debt I’m sinkin’,
    So, I hammer-down a few more miles.

I keep lookin’ for a real good reason,
To justify what makes me stay.
It sure as heck ain’t the change in seasons,
So, I’m guessing it must be the pay.

Somethin’ tells me I’ll be chasin’ pavements,
Until I’m rollin’ down the streets of gold.
And even though I’d be done with payments,
I’ll still be lookin’ for a wheel to hold.

Every day I see something different,
But every week, I just break my back.
Every month, another wolf comes knockin’,
And every year, Uncle Sam takes tax.

But over there, is a new horizon,
Yeah, I’ve seen it, but it still seems new.
The sun is setting, but it keeps on risin’,
And I keep doin’ what I’m born to do.

I mash a pedal, and I pull that wagon,
    Takin’ products to another town.
I keep on truckin’ and I keep on draggin’,
And dreamin’ bout the day I’ll shut ‘er down!
