Have you ever lost a friend – not to death, but to silly misunderstandings? It’s a terrible feeling that leaves you wondering what went wrong. You could spend weeks, months or even years pondering what was said, heard, seen, and so on. Anger, guilt, sadness and fear can really overwhelm you if you have time to dwell on the “what if’s” all by yourself. Being a truck driver doesn’t help to distract you from the thoughts that keep racing in your head, and it can often feel like everything you see is a reminder of that person. What you hear can be difficult to decipher truth from lies, and nobody knows how you really feel. You could try to say something to reconcile the friendship but, then again, what if it was your words that drove the person away? See how exhausting it can be? It’s not healthy or even productive to dwell on stagnant thoughts when you’re alone on the road. My suggestion is to talk it out with a non-biased person who would hear you repeat your story over and over without judgment or advice – they would just listen. I hope you can’t relate to this poem, but if you can, I hope you find some comfort in its words, and I pray for reconciliation in your broken relationships. Don’t forget to forgive. This poem is called “All These Things” and I hope you like it, even though it isn’t a trucking-related poem.

    ALL THESE THINGS
    By Trevor Hardwick

On these things I dwell, and it’s a living hell.
I was on a mountaintop, and then I fell.
    On these things I dwell.

I’m always on the brink, with these things I think.
Will I laugh or cry, or swim or sink?
    With these things I think.

And all these things I say, do they push you away?
Could I turn you around, and make you stay?
    With these things I say.

You forgot to let me know, please let me know!
Should I hide the pain inside, or let it show?
You’ve got to let me know.

‘Cause these things I see, they keep torturing me.
Are they really real, or are they make believe?
    All these things I see.

And all these things I hear, they sound so clear.
Are they voices in my head, or should I fear?
    All these things I hear.

Would you reach for me, if you saw me weep?
Would you strengthen me, when I feel weak?
    Would you reach for me?

You forgot to let me know, please let me know!
Do you want me by your side, or should I go?
You’ve got to let me know!

For the times we’re in, and the friends we’ve been.
It would comfort me to know, that in the end…
You’d still call me a friend.

For the times we’re in, and the friends we’ve been.
Would it comfort you to know, that in the end…
I’ll still call you my friend?

Trevor lives in Stanwood, Washington with his wife Alicia, and has been a regular contributor to 10-4 Magazine since January of 2008. Alicia puts up with Trevor’s love affair with trucks and also shares his outspoken devotion to their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
