The Public Utilities Commission approved yet another geographic area code split to accommodate the growing need for telephone numbers in the Southern California area. The existing area code, 909, will be divided into two separate area codes - 909 and 951. The new 951 area code was introduced on July 17, 2004. A permissive dialing period started on this date and will continue until October 30, 2004. The permissive dialing period is intended to give you time to get acquainted with the new area code. Until October 30, 2004, your calls will be completed even if you forget to dial the new area code. After that date you will be required to dial 951 when placing calls to that area. During the permissive dialing period, you should reprogram any automatic dialing equipment you may have, such as fax machines, modems and wireless phones. To see if you are affected by this split, please check the prefix list printed here. If your prefix (the first three numbers of your telephone number) is on this list below, you will receive the new 951 area code. The 909 area code will be split generally along the San Bernardino/Riverside County line, resulting in a northern section, which keeps the 909 area code, and a southern section, which will get the new 951 area code.
