The “Truck-It List”

By Poet/Artist/Truck Driver Trevor Hardwick

You’ve probably all heard of the movie “The Bucket List” starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.  It was about two old guys who made a list of all the things they wanted to do before they died, or “kicked the bucket.”  This month I made a list of several things that trucks haul and I call it “The Truck-it List.”  Now, we all know that virtually everything gets to take its ride on a truck at some point or another.  But I just listed a handful here to put together a funny (yet truthful) poem about the everyday things we all use or enjoy that are, perhaps, more familiar with a ride in a big truck than most people!  As always, I hope you enjoy this poem.

The Truck-It List

Apples, oranges, grape tomatoes,
Russets, reds and sweet potatoes.
Ice cream, butter, jugs of milk,
Cotton, polyester, silk.
Windows, wires, wooden stools,
Chlorine for your swimmin’ pools.
Berries, onions, food we eat,
Rocks we use to pave our streets.
The lipstick left by that sweet kiss,
It all goes on the “truck-it” list.

Prunes and prawns and sewer pipes,
Christmas lights and baby wipes.
Books and bags and tater-chips,
Fuel for trains and freighter-ships.
Tools and toys and DVD’s,
Tighty-whitey B.V.D.’s.
Your dress, your tux, your suit and ties,
Disaster aid relief supplies.
The money in our greedy fists,
It all goes on the “truck-it” list.

TV’s, tires, cardboard bales,
Lumber, screws and glue and nails.
Bubble gum and tennis shoes,
Bottles of imported booze.
The TP for the president,
The ink that brought this poem to print.
From medicine to Mickey Mouse,
And everything that’s in your house.
The bubble wrap you like to twist,
It all goes on the “truck-it” list.

Batteries, clocks and baseball bats,
books to read and cowboy hats.
Powder for your baby’s butt,
And bandages to heal your cut.
Provisions for the human race,
And things we send to outer space.
All the things that truckers bring,
It might as well be everything!
And if you think of what I’ve missed,
Just add it to the “truck-it” list.
